Guild Wars 2 has been in development for quite a while now, but there
hasn’t really been that much news coming out of developer ArenaNet of
late.
That has now changed, with Mike Ferguson taking some time out of his
schedule to discuss the large-scale Player vs Player battles that are on
offer in Guild War 2.
Don’t for a second discount the words “large scale” as Guild Wars 2
sets itself up for some truly epic encounters. Breaking from traditional
MMO setups, the game has a three-sided conflict comprising entire
servers. Yes, entire servers. That is, each team in this conflict will
be “composed of an entire server full of players” that will incorporate
what they’re calling “World vs World” instead of your typical “Player vs
Player” setup.
That’s just a summarised version of the information that was shared,
and something that is undoubtedly a jaw-dropping revelation. Other
information shared included the decisions behind including a third team,
the ability of the developer to accommodate three servers’ worth of
players, the PvP affecting a player’s progression, the objectives within
this new take on the mode as well as various other unique aspects.
It sounds almost RTS-inspired, but on a really large scale. Resources
are spread about that are then used to hire NPCs to help players in
their attack or defence of various objectives, with other variables such
as massive siege weapons that could be built to swing a conflict in a
team’s favour.
Sounds pretty interesting, doesn’t it? Assuming all of it works as
intended. Then again, ArenaNet have not left anything to be desired
previously, so there is some trust in their ability. You can read the
full discussion here.
