Deron Williams admitted that he had Monday's game in New York circled on his calendar. He proved it, and also proved that he's the best point guard in the area by scoring a season-high 38 points and leading the Nets to a 100-92 victory over Jeremy Lin and the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. It was the Nets second win in three nights.
The Nets made just one of their first 10 shots and trailed by 10 early, but they were within three at the end of the first quarter and went ahead early in the second. Behind big quarters from Williams and MarShon Brooks, they took an eight-point lead into the half. And then Williams really caught fire, hitting four threes in the third period as the Nets went up by as many as 19.
The Knicks closed to within eight as Williams picked up his fifth foul midway through the fourth, but the Nets kept them at bay with a 7-0 run. Williams returned to put them up 13 with a jumper and then immediately fouled out. But the Nets, thanks to a big three-pointer from Anthony Morrow, were able to hold on for the win.
As a team, the Nets shot just 39 percent from the field, but 15-for-31 from three-point range. Williams had a career-high eight threes on 14 attempts. Kris Humphries recorded his 13th double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Brooks finished with 18 points and DeShawn Stevenson added 11. Lin led the Knicks with 21 points and nine assists. Carmelo Anthony shot 4-for-11 in his return to action.
